Et cetera - The New York Times (30-08-13)

Seamus Heaney, who died on Friday, was a great poet, a scholar, a translator of “Beowulf,” et cetera and so on.

He was also hilarious, in that warm, convivial, very Irish way. And accessible, a trait for which I, a reader whose literary brain is not of the brightest wattage, was always grateful. His metaphors knocked me over, because I could get many of them.

In 1982 he gave the commencement address, in verse, at my alma mater, Fordham University in the Bronx. He spoke of the role of the poet, of college life, a liberal education, materialism, his family, the Irish troubles, nuclear annihilation and a few dozen other things. (...)
